A Champion’s Journey Home

For the Garvin family, June 15 is more than a birthday. It’s a celebration of resilience, gratitude, and the people who helped their son survive against the odds.

When Nolan Garvin entered the world seven weeks early, his arrival was anything but routine. After his heart rate suddenly dropped and failed to recover, doctors rushed his mother into an emergency C-section. Moments after birth, Nolan was struggling to breathe with underdeveloped lungs and was quickly transferred to the NICU at Studer Family Children’s Hospital.

While Nolan’s mother remained at the delivering hospital to recover, his father found himself facing an overwhelming reality alone.

“I was paralyzed by fear,” he recalls. “The beeps, the wires—I didn’t know what was safe or how to help.”

Everything about the NICU was unfamiliar. Watching his tiny son surrounded by medical equipment was frightening, and the uncertainty of what lay ahead felt impossible to navigate.

Then he met Kaitlin.

As Nolan’s first NICU nurse, Kaitlin became much more than a caregiver. She patiently explained each monitor, each procedure, and each milestone. She answered questions, eased fears, and helped transform feelings of helplessness into confidence.

“She cared for Nolan, but she also cared for me,” Nolan’s father says. “She helped me understand what was happening and made me feel like I had a role in helping my son get stronger.”

Though the Garvins arrived at Studer Family Children’s Hospital because it was the closest facility capable of providing the specialized care Nolan needed, they quickly realized they had found something extraordinary.

“You can have the best technology in the world, but without people who truly care, it’s just equipment,” his father says. “At Studer, every person—the nurses, doctors, even the receptionists—cared like family.”

Day by day, Nolan grew stronger. The tiny baby whose life began with uncertainty continued reaching milestone after milestone, supported by a team that celebrated every victory alongside his family.

Today, Nolan is a thriving, energetic four-year-old with a bright smile and an even brighter personality. But the bond formed during those early days in the NICU remains as strong as ever.

Every year around his birthday, the Garvin family returns to Studer Family Children’s Hospital for a special reunion. Their destination is always the same: a visit with Kaitlin, the nurse who helped guide them through one of the most difficult chapters of their lives.

“Nolan means ‘champion,’ and that’s exactly what he is,” his father says.

For the Garvin family, returning to Studer Family Children’s Hospital each year is a reminder of how far Nolan has come. For Kaitlin and the NICU team, it’s a powerful reminder of why they do what they do.

What began as a frightening emergency four years ago has become a story of hope, compassion, and the lasting impact of exceptional care—a story that continues to unfold with every birthday visit home.
