At Sacred Heart, we believe healing goes far beyond medicine—it’s about providing comfort, building connection, and showing compassion every step of the way. It’s this belief that inspired a remarkable group of high school students known as the Change Makers Junior Board to bring something truly special to our pediatric surgical team: Birdie, our brand-new facility dog.
The Change Makers are a passionate group of young volunteers dedicated to supporting Sacred Heart and Studer Family Children’s Hospital. With hearts full of compassion and a commitment to service, these students devote their time, energy, and fundraising efforts to enhance the care experience for children and families in our community. Their latest and most impactful project brought Birdie into the hospital family—a four-legged companion ready to provide emotional support in the pediatric operating room.
For children facing surgery, the experience can be overwhelming and frightening. Birdie’s gentle presence offers quiet comfort, easing fears and providing a calming influence during moments of uncertainty. More than just a furry friend, Birdie serves as a source of hope and healing, helping children and their families navigate some of the most challenging times with a little more ease and peace.
Since joining the team, Birdie has worked paw-in-paw with pediatric surgical staff, comforting patients, reducing anxiety, and fostering a warm, welcoming environment. Birdie’s ability to connect with patients on a deeply personal level has already made a profound difference, turning stressful hospital visits into moments of calm and reassurance.
This extraordinary addition to our care team wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and generosity of the Change Makers. Their commitment exemplifies the power of youth-driven compassion and community support, reminding us all how much impact even the youngest among us can have.
We invite you to learn more about Birdie’s journey, the inspiring Change Makers who made it happen, and the lasting difference they’re making for children and families at Sacred Heart.
