The Sacred Heart Foundation holds a special place in the heart of one young volunteer, whose connection to the hospital goes back to her birth. Born prematurely with a cataract in one eye, Melina Snyder had her first surgery at just five weeks old. Although she was too young to remember, her parents recall the exceptional care she received. “My mom always tells me how much the care meant to them,” she shares. “I can’t remember it, but knowing how they treated me has stayed with my family forever.”
The hospital's staff worked tirelessly to ensure her well-being, offering personalized support for her and her twin sister. For instance, the hospital allowed her twin sister to sleep in the same crib, which helped her recovery. This level of care left a lasting impression on her family, and as a result, Sacred Heart became a place that meant more than just medical treatment.
Now, as a teenager, Melina found herself back at Sacred Heart, but this time as part of Changemakers, the junior board of Sacred Heart Foundation focused on raising funds for the hospital. Her involvement with Changemakers is currently focused on fundraising efforts to provide a new facility dog for the pediatric operating room, aiming to offer emotional comfort to young patients.
Through her role on the junior board, Melina has not only gained leadership skills, like organizing events and working with community partners, but also learned the importance of empathy and giving back. Her early health challenges helped her connect on a personal level with the children benefiting from the hospital’s care, and she feels a sense of fulfillment by supporting others going through similar struggles. “If you don’t connect with the purpose, you won’t contribute as much,” Melina says. “These kids need us—whether it’s through a facility dog that makes their day or a fundraiser that helps them heal. You have to see the difference you’re making to truly give it your all.”
Looking ahead, Melina plans to pursue a career in medicine, possibly in psychology or neuroscience, as a way to continue helping others. Her experience with Changemakers has reinforced her passion for healthcare, giving her a taste of the kind of impact she hopes to have in the future. In her own words, being a part of the Sacred Heart community has been a full-circle moment—one that has given her the chance to give back and inspire others in the process.
