Kathy's Story: A Future Worth Fighting For

Kathy's Story

When Kathy Troup was diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer in May 2026, she received news no one is ever prepared to hear: she may have only two months to live. For Kathy and her daughter, Laken, the future suddenly felt uncertain, and the moments they once looked forward to seemed painfully out of reach.

At 54 years old, Kathy had been experiencing severe back pain for months, unaware that cancer had spread throughout her body. What began as a visit to the emergency room quickly became a life-changing diagnosis, emergency spinal surgery and an overwhelming prognosis. With Kathy placed in hospice care, her 21-year-old daughter suddenly found herself navigating a reality neither could have imagined.

Laken put her college experience on hold, transitioned to online classes and became her mother's full-time caregiver. Although the responsibility was frightening, she was determined to do everything she could for the woman who had always cared for her.

Finding Hope in a Second Opinion

When a family friend and physician at Ascension Sacred Heart encouraged Laken to seek a second opinion, she refused to give up hope. Her determination brought Kathy to Dr. Adrian Bersabe and the oncology team at Ascension Sacred Heart’s Cancer Care Center in Pensacola.

There, Kathy found a team willing to explore the treatment options still available to her. Under Dr. Bersabe’s care, she began chemotherapy and other specialized treatments, supported by caregivers who understood that treating cancer meant caring for the person and family facing it.

The changes were remarkable. As treatment progressed, Kathy began experiencing relief from the pain and nausea that had consumed her daily life. She regained the ability to walk, and her family began to see possibilities they had once feared were lost.

Then, on September 23, just months after receiving her diagnosis, Kathy heard news she never imagined would come so soon: her cancer was in remission.

While her diagnosis means ongoing treatment and continued uncertainty, the news gave Kathy and Laken something they had desperately hoped for—more time together and a renewed sense of possibility.

Looking Forward to Life’s Little Moments

Today, Kathy is looking toward the future with gratitude and excitement. She dreams of traveling to see the Northern Lights, celebrating Laken’s wedding and college graduation in 2027, and one day holding her future grandchildren.

These are the moments that once seemed out of reach. Now, they are milestones Kathy and Laken can look forward to together.

Throughout her journey, Kathy has remained deeply grateful for the people who helped give her another chance. She credits her daughter’s determination, the expertise of Dr. Bersabe and neurosurgeon Dr. Frank Farokhi, and her faith for helping carry her through some of life’s most difficult moments.

Her story is also a testament to the extraordinary bond between a mother and daughter. When Kathy could no longer care for herself, Laken stepped forward with unwavering love, courage and advocacy. Together, they found strength in one another and in the compassionate care surrounding them.

A Reminder of What Hope Makes Possible

This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Kathy’s journey reminds us that hope can be found even in the most uncertain circumstances. It is found in a daughter who refuses to give up, in a physician who explores every available option, and in a care team dedicated to helping patients experience more of life's meaningful moments.

For Kathy, hope means more time with her daughter, more memories waiting to be made and more opportunities to experience the life she loves. And for every family facing a difficult diagnosis, that hope is worth fighting for.
